Performance tuning of the car or the engine is one job which most people ignore. And, those who actually do it enjoy a lot of benefits like higher mileage, improved pick up and so many other performance boosts. You car is not any different from you. Here, you may have to consider a lot of things like the flywheel, crankshaft, pistons, and connecting rods and so on. The main thing here is reduction of inertia. You can even use specialized body parts like alloy wheel and other alloy based parts to reduce the overall body weight of the car.

The list of things that can be done to increase the performance is quite high and depends a lot on how much you wish to spend on such things.
