Porsche Green Lights 918 Spyder 718HP Plug-in-Hybrid Supercar for Production

This radical concept from Porsche, the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid is going to be built as a limited production model. This was declared by Porsche themselves. The concept car had been displayed by them at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show which was held earlier in this year along side other such as the insight hybrid.
The concept study and its response from customers it appears is the inspiration for Porsche to go for the full fledged development and production of the car. The board of management at Porsche gave the go ahead due to this response from customers.
When they started the project, Porsche had set for themselves a limit of 1,000 orders. If they reached that number it was to go ahead with the project was their decision. However, by the first week of July itself, they had received 2,000 orders from individuals. The supercar had a super demand it appears.
The car would have a 3.4 liter V8 engine which would be mounted at the mid section. It would then have an electric motor mounted at the rear axle. The total power that is expected from the power house is 218 hp. The car is to be developed in Weissach and assembled in Zuffenhausen. This would be in line for Porsche for their promised commitment to the German country.
For specifications the car is to have a fuel economy setting of 78 mph when running in the hybrid version. This translates to 3 liters per kilometer. Emission factor of CO2 is 79 gm/km. Not that the car would be a slow droning one for the acceleration factor is 0 to 100 kmph that is 62 mph in 3.2 seconds. The car would be able to cruise at top speeds of 320 kmph which is 198 mph. All this comes for a price of $630,000 whenever it is slated for being unleashed.
